Preakness stakes preview

The Preakness will be held on May 15 at Pimlico, MD. Traditionally the Preakness Stakes is held on the third Saturday in May. The Preakness is the second race of the Triple Crown.

A large field will race against Super Saver, the Kentucky Derby winner and a horse racing betting favorite horse. It appears that thirteen horses will compete for the one million-dollar prize. Post positions will be drawn on May 12th.
Super Saver and four other horses ran in the Kentucky Derby. The distance for the Preakness Stakes in 1 3/16 miles compared to the Kentucky Derby which is 1 1/4 miles.

The speed at the Kentucky Derby was considered very fast. Many experts expect the Preakness not to match that speed.

Super Saver is staying at Churchill Downs before going to the Preakness. His jockey, Calvin Borel has put him through his drills at an easy pace. Super Saver’s trainer is encouraged by his energy level and very satisfied by the jockey’s working of the horse.

Jackson Bend competed against Super Saver at the Kentucky Derby and finished 12th. Nick Zito, the trainer, feels that Jackson Bend is tough enough to rebound at the Preakness.

The track might be a little muddied on the day of the race. Rain has been forecast for Tuesday, with isolated thunderstorms possible on Wednesday and Friday. On Saturday the temperature should be in the upper seventy’s and only a 10% chance of rain.

No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed did it in 1978.
