Horse Racing: Big Red Mike Wins the Queens Plate
The Queen’s Plate is the first race in a series of three races, which are: The Queen’s Plate, The Prince of Whale’s Stakes, and the Breeders’ Stakes. Together these three races make up the Triple Crown. Queen Elizabeth was present for the 151st running of the Queen’s Plate race, which was held in Toronto, Canada.
From the beginning of the race, Big Red Mike took the lead in this year’s Queen’s Plate race. Eurico Rosa da Silva was Big Red Mike’s jockey, and said he joked with the horse before the race about the Queen Elizabeth being there, but that there was “no pressure”. After winning the race, Big Red Mike became the third horse that has won the Queen’s Plate after also coming in first at the trial. Also, his jockey holds the honor of being the first jockey ever to win this race two years in a row. Big Red Mike was trained by Nicholas Gonzalez.
Contrary to the outcome, a horse named Hotep was considered the favorite to win the Queen’s Plate. Hotep was beaten by a mere one and a half lengths, and is a brother to Eye of the Leopard who won the Queen’s Plate last year.
