Preview – Man o’ War Breeders’ Cup – Horse Racing

At Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, on July 10, 2010, the 52nd annual running of the Man o’ War Breeders’ Cup stakes is going to take place, racing fans take note. This Grade I event race is open to horses three years and up and it offers a purse of $600,000. A distance of 1 3/8 miles is run over in the race on the grass.

The four-year old Gio Ponte, who is owned by Castleton Lyons Farm and is trained by Christophe Clement, was the winner of 2009 race. For Saturday, the anticipated entrants for the 2010 stakes include Gio Ponte, 4-year old Midnight Silver, 4 year-old Bearpath, 5-year old Expansion, 6 year-old Mission Approved, 7-year old Grand Couturier, and 8-year old Interpatation, with entries not yet finalized.

Breeders Cup odds star, Gio Ponte would join the roster of horses with most wins, all consecutive incidentally, including With Anticipation (2001 & 2002), Solar Splendor (1991 & 1992), and Majesty’s Prince (1983 & 1984), if he wins. On June 26, 2010, this field is down from the official list of 28 nominations finalized .

At post time on Saturday, the spectators should expect temperatures of around 85 degrees as the oppressive heat wave currently experienced by New York City is slated to break by mid-week.
