2010 Breeders’ Cup set for Friday and Saturday at Churchill Downs

The 27th Breeders’ Cup World Championships takes place this weekend at Churchill Downs, with the two-day, 14-race event offering $25.5 million in prize money.

On Friday, there are five races, all for females, highlighted by the $2 million Ladies’ Classic, as well as the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, which gets going at 4:10 pm ET.

After the Marathon are the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Filly and Mare Sprint, Juvenile Fillies, Filly and Mare Turf and the Ladies’ Classic, with post-time for the 1 1/8-mile Ladies’ Classic at 7:30 pm ET.

The big day is Saturday, when there are eight open Breeders’ Cup races that attracts lots of horse racing odds, concluding with the $5 million Classic at 6:45 pm ET. Preceding the Classic will be the Juvenile Turf, Sprint, Turf Sprint, Juvenile, Mile, Dirt Mile and Turf.

A record 184 horses have been pre-entered for the event. Post positions will drawn on Tuesday.

The favorite is Zenyatta, which is at 5-2 odds. Zenyatta will be going for its 20th-straight win and will be trying to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic for the second-straight year.

Last year, Zenyatta beat Gio Ponti with a powerful stretch drive while running her final quarter-mile in a brisk 23 1/5 seconds, but this year she will face Quality Road, Blame, Lookin At Lucky, as well as having a rematch with Gio Ponti.
