Zenyatta won’t get a chance to run in a race named after her.

The Lady’s Secret Stakes, which had briefly been renamed the Zenyatta Stakes in tribute to the 6-year-old mare’s popular 2008 and 2009 wins at the race, has reverted back to its original name, due largely to the fact that Zenyatta will be appearing in the race.

At the time of the renaming, Zenyatta had been retired; however, with the news that Zenyatta would continue to race and not be bred, her owners and trainer preferred that the race name be switched back.

The Oak Tree Racing Association, which operates the Lady’s Secret Stakes, will be holding their meeting at Hollywood Park for the first time since the race’s inception. The meeting, which this year features 22 days of racing, had previously been held at Santa Anita, who had hosted it since 1969.

However, both the Thoroughbred Owners of California and the California Thoroughbred Trainers expressed worries about Santa Anita’s degrading synthetic track, concerns that are causing Santa Anita to install a dirt track in time for next year’s meeting. It still might not be enough to return the meeting to Santa Anita though; race officials are considering holding the 2011 meeting at Del Mar.

Friday night at Emerald Downs, the razor-sharp Ernie Owl maintained his perfect in the money streak.

With a two-length triumph over Strawberry Topper in the featured $10,000 Parametrix Purse for older horses, the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred scored his fifth victory of the year. In all nine races this year including the last seven starts at Emerald Downs, Ernie Owl has finished first, second or third.

Ernie Owl ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1 minute, 16 1/5 seconds on a fast track and paid $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10, with Gallyn Mitchell riding his second winner of the night. For owner John Chase, Charles Essex is the trainer.

Ernie Owl with earnings of $36,510 is 5-2-2 in nine starts this year, swept past Bleu Tarp into the stretch and held off Strawberry Topper late for the triumph.

Strawberry Topper offered a solid bid in the lane and is ridden by Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo, but settled for second place and couldn’t get past Ernie Owl. Strawberry Topper returned $3 and $4.80.

To finish third, Snake Attack, ridden by Kevin Krigger, ran evenly and paid $3.20. The order of finish was completed by Flaming Bullet, Chickasaw Park and Bleu Tarp. Chickasaw park was bumped at the start and failed to threaten and was bidding for his 13th career win at Emerald Downs.

For $10,000, Ernie Owl was reclaimed by trainer Mike Chambers, who saddled the gelding to four wins and a second in five starts before losing him via claim on July 16.

In the Del Mar Grade 3 $147,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, Sweet August Moon won her first race of 2010, this Sunday. To get on track, Sweet August Moon has struggled in the win department in 2010, going winless in her first four races.

Sweet August Moon, the five year-old filly engaged the leader and favorite Alpha Kitten when the two reached the clubhouse turn for the stretch. To the finish, the two put on a neck and neck race, with Sweet August Moon finally finding another gear to finish the job, winning by 3/4 of a length. From far off the pace, Silver Swallow made a lightning fast late run and was closing fast as the 6 1/2 furlong race finished. If she had kicked for home just a few moments earlier, she could have laid the field to waste.

Of only four horses, the race was a short field for the Rancho Bernardo Handicap. Free Flying Soul was the missing and she was injured with a chip in her ankle. To rectify the problem, Free Flying Soul is now scheduled for surgery and will miss a minimum of three months.

Alpha Kitten broke fast out of the gate on the back stretch and was the even money favorite. As they entered the turn, Alpha Kitten had the field covered but by the time they rounded the turn and headed down the stretch, Sweet August Moon had engaged her in an all out battle headed towards the finish line.

I Want Revenge will be going up against five intense rivals Saturday in the second segment of his Grade 3 comeback at the $300,000 Phillip H. Iselin Stakes at Monmouth Park. He still is among the favorites in horse racing betting.

Now at the age of 4 and under the care of trainer Rick Dutrow, I Want Revenge came in third at the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park on July 3. The Suburban was the beginning of an optimistic come back. I Want Revenge was the morning-line favorite for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, he was scratched on the morning of the race due to a leg injury. The ensuing surgery could have ended his career.

Joe Bravo will be the jockey Saturday, serving as a replacement for regular rider Joe Talamo, who has a fractured wrist from his ride at Del Mar.

The other participants of the field for the 1 1/8-mile Iselin is Duke of Mischief, Gone Astray (Salvator Mile Winner), Our Edge, Redding Colliery, and Sir Whimsey.

Devoted trainer David Fawkes gave Duke of Mischief a rest following two challenging races in a short time period. The Oaklawn Handicap victor finished eighth in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster on June 12 at Churchill Down. He then proceeded to finishing second in The Salvator Mile At Monmouth on July 3.

The healthy Gone Astray, tended to by Shug McGaughey, emerged with as the winner at The Salvator by approximately five lengths. It was an excellent race that was clocked at 50.11 seconds in the first half-mile and 1:14.05 for the 6 furlongs.

“It was very awkward,” Fawkes said. “Everything today was based upon speed today, horse to horse. Earlier that day, generic horses were making it to the half in 47. I’m not sure what happened on the track. Everything just went dead.”

Duke of Mischief achieved his final breeze on Saturday. He ran a respectable half-mile in 48.40.

“The track was very competitive, but he still put in some good work,” Fawkes said. “I am happy with his performance.”

In Monmouth Park’s showcase race, under Martin Garcia, Lookin At Lucky burst into the clear and cruised to a four-length victory over Trappe Shot.

Lookin At Lucky’s status as the best 3-year-old in the country was confirmed after the emphatic win Sunday, as it came against a star-studded, seven-horse field considered the strongest in the 43-year-old history of the race. The Derby and the Preakness winner was featured in the race for the first time.

Winning trainer Bob Baffert said, “He’s been sitting on a really big race. He’s been training just unbelievably. It’s good to see him finally come out of his shell. He’s growing up and he stamped himself as a great horse.”

For the third time in five starts this year, a bay son of Smart Strike, Lookin At Lucky won, and for earnings of $2.7 million for owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, the 2-year-old champion improved his career record to eight wins in 10 starts.

At third place finish was First Dude, followed by Super Saver, Afleet Again, Ice Box and Our Dark Knight. Hall of Famer Baffert becomes the first trainer to win the Haskell four times. He also won with Point Given in 2001, War Emblem in 2002 and Roman Ruler in 2005.

Lookin At Lucky returned $4.40, $3 and $2.40, sent off as the 6-5 favorite. Trappe Shot had won four in a row, paid $3.40 and $2.60. First Dude paid $3 to show.

1:49.83 was the winning time for the 1 1-8 miles over a fast Monmouth Park track.

Talk is running rampant about a possible match up between Zenyatta and filly Rachel Alexander. The talk stems from Rachel Alexander trucking up to Saratoga in what could be a possible start in the Personal Ensign, which would be August 29. Owner Jess Jackson said of racing August 29th, “I do think there is a chance she can run here.”

Horse racing odds star, Zenyatta is working towards racing August 7th for Del Mar’s Clement Hirsch but owner Jerry Moss has never been a fan of the Del Mar poly track. The first day after the start of the Del Mar meet, morning workouts were stopped because of separation of the poly track surface.

Another possibility could be the Woodward on September 4th. Both owners could hold out and show up for the Woodward. A race both horses training schedules coincide well with the Woodward also.

West coast phenom, Zenyatta is a perfect 17-0 in his career and the filly Rachel Alexandra is the current Horse of the Year preparing for her fifth start of the year. Several tracks have been attempting to entice the two camps to enter their horses in the same race for over a year and this may be the best opportunity for the two to meet.

George Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees owner died at age 80 Tuesday and I don’t think many people know that he dabbled in horseracing. In thoroughbred horse racing, he was a big player, even entering horses in the Kentucky Derby; he actually did more than dabbling. He was quiet and reserved with the horseracing crowd, the funny thing was, he was brash and outspoken in baseball.

Majestic Warrior, a beautiful horse who won the Hopeful Stakes in 2007, was the most famous horses owned by him and Bellamy Road, who was the favorite in the 2005 Kentucky Derby. Bellamy Road finished 7th.

Steinbrenner loved the Kentucky and he loved his horses. Of all the horses who ran the Derby, he has six. For 15 years, for Steinbrenner, noted horse trainer Nick Zito trained horses. Around the horse track, those who knew Steinbrenner couldn’t say enough good things about him. Zito chimed in with, “I had a good relationship with him. He took me to a playoff game in 1995 and sat me next to Joe DiMaggio.”

In Florida, Steinbrenner had a 750-acre Kinsman Stud that was a major breeding ground for horses. At Kinsman breeding and training, there are about 50 horses. Steinbrenner owned shares of Florida Downs racetrack, Balmoral and Maywood in Illinois.

The Queen’s Plate is the first race in a series of three races, which are: The Queen’s Plate, The Prince of Whale’s Stakes, and the Breeders’ Stakes. Together these three races make up the Triple Crown. Queen Elizabeth was present for the 151st running of the Queen’s Plate race, which was held in Toronto, Canada.

From the beginning of the race, Big Red Mike took the lead in this year’s Queen’s Plate race. Eurico Rosa da Silva was Big Red Mike’s jockey, and said he joked with the horse before the race about the Queen Elizabeth being there, but that there was “no pressure”. After winning the race, Big Red Mike became the third horse that has won the Queen’s Plate after also coming in first at the trial. Also, his jockey holds the honor of being the first jockey ever to win this race two years in a row. Big Red Mike was trained by Nicholas Gonzalez.

Contrary to the outcome, a horse named Hotep was considered the favorite to win the Queen’s Plate. Hotep was beaten by a mere one and a half lengths, and is a brother to Eye of the Leopard who won the Queen’s Plate last year.
