Super Saver (Todd Pletcher)

Super Saver is one of many horses trained by Todd Pletcher who has a chance at winning the Kentucky Derby on May 1.  If the colt were able to do so, it would be a first for Pletcher, as he has yet to train a Kentucky Derby-winning horse in his decorated career.

He is out of Maria’s Mon and Supercharger.  Supercharger is the daughter of A.P. Indy, winner of the 1992 Belmont Stakes, and grandson of Seattle Slew, Triple Crown winner in 1977.  He was homebred by WinStar Farms and is currently owned by them.

With $363,832 in graded stakes earnings, Super Saver sits in 14th place a few weeks before the Kentucky Derby on May 1.  He is one spot ahead of Discreetly Mine, another Pletcher-trained horse.  Rule (3rd), Eskendereya (5th), and Mission Impazible (7th) are the other Pletcher horses in front of him on the list.

His earnings have come from a slew of impressive finishes in graded stakes races.  In the four graded stakes races he has been in, he has not finished outside the top 4.  He finished first at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) this past November.

Most recently, Super Saver competed in the Arkansas Derby.  The race took place on April 10.  He was beaten by a nose by 17-1 long shot Line of David. He appeared to be in good condition following the race and is being flown to Kentucky on April 12.  The second place finish ensured him a spot in the Kentucky Derby, where he will compete against many other Pletcher-trained horses.
